“I Am With You”
Text: Matthew 28:20
“And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Introduction: The Comfort of Presence
There is a profound difference between facing life alone and knowing someone is by your side. Whether it’s a close friend, family member, or mentor, their presence can make all the difference in moments of uncertainty, fear, or challenge. In Matthew 28:20, Jesus gives His disciples—and us—the ultimate assurance: “I am with you always.”
This promise is not just for the disciples who first heard it but for all believers. It is a truth that brings comfort, strength, and courage in every season of life.
1. God’s Presence is Promised
The promise of “I am with you” is not new in Scripture. From the Old Testament to the New, God repeatedly assures His people of His presence.
- To Moses: When Moses hesitated to lead Israel, God said, “I will be with you” (Exodus 3:12). It was God’s presence, not Moses’ ability, that would accomplish the task.
- To Joshua: As Joshua prepared to lead Israel into the Promised Land, God declared, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Joshua 1:5).
- To Haggai: Then Haggai, the Lord’s messenger, gave this message 0f the Lord, to the people: ” I am with you” declares the Lord as they prepared to build the house of the Lord.
- To Us Through Christ: In Matthew 1:23, Jesus is called Immanuel, which means “God with us.” From His birth to His ascension, Jesus embodied God’s presence among His people.
Application: No matter where you are or what you face, God’s promise of His presence remains unshaken. You are not alone.
2. God’s Presence Gives Strength
Jesus spoke the words “I am with you always” after commissioning His disciples to go and make disciples of all nations. The task was monumental, and the challenges were daunting. But His presence made it possible.
- In Times of Fear: The disciples faced persecution, rejection, and danger, yet they were emboldened by the knowledge that Christ was with them (Acts 4:13).
- In Weakness: Paul writes, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13). God’s presence provides strength when we feel weak or inadequate.
Illustration: A child walking through a dark forest with a parent feels no fear because they trust in the parent’s presence. Likewise, when we know God is with us, we can face even the darkest valleys (Psalm 23:4).
Application: Are you facing challenges that seem insurmountable? Draw strength from the knowledge that God is by your side, empowering you.
3. God’s Presence Brings Peace
Life is filled with uncertainties and storms, but God’s presence brings a peace that transcends circumstances.
- Jesus in the Storm: In Mark 4:35-41, Jesus calmed a raging storm while the disciples were panicking. His presence turned their fear into awe.
- The Promise of Peace: Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27).
Application: Are you overwhelmed by the storms of life? Trust in the presence of Jesus, who calms every fear and brings peace to your heart.
4. God’s Presence is Eternal
Jesus’ promise extends beyond this life: “I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
- Forever with God: Revelation 21:3 gives a vision of eternity where God will dwell with His people, and they will be His. His presence is not temporary but eternal.
- Even in Death: Paul writes, “To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8). God’s presence accompanies us not only in life but also in death.
Illustration: A traveler on a long journey finds comfort in knowing that their guide is experienced and will not leave their side. God is our guide, leading us through life and into eternity.
Application: Trust in the eternal promise of God’s presence. No matter what happens in this life, His presence is your ultimate assurance.
5. Living in the Reality of His Presence
If Jesus is always with us, how should that truth shape our lives?
- Boldness in Mission: Just as the disciples were empowered to fulfill the Great Commission, we are called to step out in faith, knowing that God goes before us.
- Trust in Trials: Instead of succumbing to fear or anxiety, we can rest in the assurance that God is working all things for our good (Romans 8:28).
- Intimacy in Prayer: God’s presence invites us into a deeper relationship with Him. He is not a distant God but a loving Father who desires communion with us.
Conclusion: God Is With You
The promise of Jesus, “I am with you always,” is the anchor for our souls. It reminds us that:
- We are never alone.
- We can draw strength and peace from His presence.
- His presence is eternal, securing our hope for the future.
Challenge: How are you responding to the reality of God’s presence in your life? Are you living in boldness, peace, and trust, or are you letting fear and doubt hold you back?
Call to Action: Whatever you face today, remember: God is with you. Trust Him, lean on Him, and walk boldly in the knowledge of His unshakable promise. Amen.
I am dealing with the possibility that my wife is losing her memory. I claim the promise that, God is with us, in this journey.
