The Aaronic Benediction

Numbers 6:22-27 is one of the most beautiful blessings in the Bible, often called the Priestly Blessing or the Aaronic Benediction. It says:

22 The LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
23 “Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, ‘Thus you shall bless the people of Israel: You shall say to them,
24 The LORD bless you and keep you;
25 The LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you;
26 The LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.
27 So shall they put my name upon the people of Israel, and I will bless them.”

Meaning for Today

This passage isn’t just an ancient blessing—it holds deep meaning and relevance for our lives today:

  1. God’s Protection (“The LORD bless you and keep you”)
    • This reminds us that God is our protector and sustainer. In a world filled with uncertainty, this verse reassures us that He watches over us.
  2. God’s Favor and Grace (“The LORD make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you”)
    • The idea of God’s face shining upon us means His favor and presence are with us. It’s a reminder that God is not distant—He is near, full of grace, and ready to pour out His love.
  3. God’s Peace (“The LORD lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace”)
    • “Peace” here is more than just the absence of trouble—it is shalom, meaning wholeness, well-being, and harmony in every area of life. It’s a peace that comes from knowing God is in control.
  4. God’s Name Upon Us (“So shall they put my name upon the people”)
    • To have God’s name on us means we belong to Him. As believers, we carry His identity, His authority, and His love wherever we go.
